What do you have to say for your What do you have to say for, for your What do you have to say for your What do you have to say for yourself You had it all But you got greedy (You wanted it all) You wanted it all You wanted money You wanted fame You wanted power But you ruined it Yeah, you ruined it it You ruined it You ruined it for everyone. What do you have to say for your What do you have to say for, for your What do you have to say for your What do you have to say for yourself You can put your name on all the buildings you want But it doesn't matter It doesn't matter if your name’s in gold And it doesn’t matter It doesn't matter if your house is white What do you have to say for yourself What do you have to say for yourself...

about

Pulling from a wide palette of influences––from early 80s post-punk and New Wave, to techno, dance-punk, and mid-aughts indie rock––Modern Culture is the kind of genre-bending record you’d find somewhere in the DFA catalogue. The album’s consistency is found in its sweeping synths, dance-worthy beats, sharp, often biting lyrics, and especially catchy vocals and bass lines. In other words, LOVVS’ “ability to craft compositions that will continue to swirl through your head,” as reviewers have noted. (But that’s not to overlook the little bit of “weird” thrown in for good measure.)

Modern Culture features 10 tracks, and was recorded and co-produced by Beau Sorensen (Death Cab for Cutie, Sparklehorse, Garbage). The album also features a number of guest appearances by notable Bay Area artists including vocals from pop artist Lyrah, and drums and percussion by Jason Slota (Theo & The Get Down Stay Down, Tune-Yards).

It was recorded and mixed from Sept 2018 until January 2020 at Tiny Telephone Studios in Oakland, CA—w/ Beau Sorenson engineering and helping produce the entire record.

Everything was tracked through a vintage 64-channel Neve 8068 console, with many of the songs being tracked to 2” tape on a Studer A820.

Instruments used on the record include a Moog Modular IIIc, ARP Quadra, Sequential Circuits Pro-One, Prophet 5 & Prophet 10, Oberheim SEM, Korg MS-10, Minimoog, Roland SH-101, Mellotron M4000D (Micro), Simmons SDSV, Roland TR-606, Oberheim DX, Vermona ER-9, Roland TR-808, Nord Drum 3P, Synthstrom Deluge, set of three (3) Polyend Perc drumming machines, some random eurorack modular bits, a set of Remo Rototoms, Rickenbacker bass guitar & various live drums
